15 reasons why we are scared of web developers

I can understand why fitness professionals baulk at the idea of outsourcing their web work to someone who is NOT your brothers best mate, or NOT a local company that charges the earth for something that never gets finished.

I for one have spent (read wasted) more than my fair share of time and money on web site development and design work that has not met my expectations! I have outsourced locally, and internationally and found that both routes are fraught with danger, deception and a lot of frustration.

Dealing with geeks is not an easy task at the best of times, but over the last few years I have developed tactics to get what I want, when I want.

What follows is my 15 reasons why we, as fitness professionals, are scared of geeks, and what we can do to get over it.
1. The geeks think they are in charge – This is based upon the fact they have the knowledge you don’t. to counter this remember you are employing them for a fee, if they do not deliver they should not get paid.

2. You know nothing about web development - Worry not, you simply need to know what kind of website you want, write this down and ask for it!

3. You don’t know how much it should cost - This is an easy one, you’ll find that most websites can be built for much less than you think. A 3 page site should be less than 250 dollars, a fully featured personal trainer site can be designed and coded for less than 600 dollars! Often MUCH much less!

4. I don’t know where to find a developer - Another easy one, Elance.com, Guru.com, ScriptLance.com, RentaCoder.com, Guru.com, Odesk.com. Probably the easiest one to start with is Elance.com it is where most of my projects are based, and I have found some fantastic companies through this.

5. Web developer or Designer? - Your best bet is to find a web DESIGNER who can also code, if you want a pretty professional looking site. If you need more function find a DEVELOPER. Many of the companies I deal with have both designers and developers in their team. The one man operations are cheaper but probably limited in ability.

6. What if they ask a question I don’t understand? – The problem with geeks is they possess the ability to talk down to non geeks with their “Borg style” language. Ask them to explain difficult technical questions, remember you are in charge.

7. What if they don’t deliver? - I operate, like other experienced Elance users, a 2 strikes rule… If they miss a deadline, mess with your original ideas, don’t deliver good enough products then ditch them… this may mean losing a couple of dollars on the outlay but it’ll save you headaches.

8. They try to tell you what you REALLY want? – Do not be swayed by someone telling you what you want. Write a strong, detailed specification and ask your web guy not to deviate from it.

9. How do I know if I have chosen the right geek? – Whilst it is tempting to go for the cheapest bid on your project, DON’T! Pick someone who has reacted to your project, asked you questions, shown an active interest in what you are doing, and communicates well to your questions… All this can be done during the bidding process.

10. How many bids do I need? - When using Elance or another site, fix the bidding time to just 3 days, any longer and you’ll spend hours sifting through bids. You want to select those that react quickly and fulfil the criteria in number 9.

11. How long should it take? - It has almost been programmed in to us that web site stuff takes a long time. In fact this is WRONG! I have companies who can deliver a site with 2-3 days once the specification is agreed.

12. They want me to take some hosting package with the site what is this? – My suggestion would be not to take the developers hosting package. Your site will always be with them, even when you fall out with them and you’ll never have access to the site to transfer or ask a different developer to do the work on it. Hosting packages start from a couple of bucks a month… I can recommend a few that are more expensive but offer all you’ll ever need from a host.

13. What if I just need to make a small change? - I always suggest that fitness professionals get a site built using HTML/CSS, this is a coding langauage you could learn in a few hours, and I can show you how to edit in less than 20 minutes! Geeks always want to use the latest technology and coding language, DO NOT let them, otherwise you’ll never have any control over your site.

14. How can I ensure my site gets done quickly? - Make sure you have typed up EVERYTHING you want on each page of your site, gather all the images, logos, videos, audio together before you start the bidding process. Ensure you also have the login details for aweber, paypal, clickbank or other services you want included on the site. When you find the developer, give it all to them at the start.

15. How can I explain what it should look like? - Gather a list of ALL the websites you like, and they fit with the kind of design you like… Also useful to gather a list of sites you hate and the reasons why you hate them. Give your geek all this information right at the start.

Hopefully these pointers should set you off in the right direction with your website project. I strongly recommend that once you have got all the information you want to relay on your site, get on Elance immediately and post your project.

Don’t be scared of these guys, they are almost human ;o)

Do You Have This For Your Bootcamp Website?

MyFitGeek – Tim Goodwin here. I have been looking at a lot of Fitness Professional’s websites recently, and there are a few things that strike me as being a big problem for there ability to get clients in to their bootcamp.

I had this problem early on too. I didn’t really understand the implications it had for my business until I looked at the stats for my website and which pages where getting opened.

I found that visitors where not really going to certain pages,  and these pages were really important, such as the ones telling the visitor about my other products and services. It was no wonder nobody bought my e-books or recommended products. Those pages were never even opened!

The point here is that if you have more than one product or service to sell, then you need more than one site. Each site must have a singular focus.

You cannot and should not sell your ebook from your personal training website.

You cannot and should not try to get people on to your bootcamp through you personal training site.

What Is Your Sites Singular Focus?

When you have a singular focus to each site, then it is much easier to control how your web site visitors will navigate through your site. It is much easier to draw attention to the benefits of the thing your are trying to sell.

You are then more likely to convert that person to being a paying client.

You know this from your own surfing experience.

If the site you are visiting is overly complicated, packed with  flashing images, lots of headings all vying for your attention you have information overload, and you simply click the back button to see if there is an easier site to navigate.

So the action for today is to take a look at your own site right now and make sure the site has a singular focus.

Come back to this BLOG post to comment on your sites singular focus. Add your web site address to create the back link, and so I can take a look at your site too.

Regards

Tim

PS. Don’t get me wrong here, one of my sites is still wrong in this respect, but I am taking action to rectify this. Follow the actions in this email and get started now to ensure your bootcamps fill up next month.

One Of The Hardest Concepts You’ll Need to Grasp (Hint: It is easy…)

Once again it is MyfitGeek – Tim Goodwin again! I am going to let you in on a secret today. One that many people do not know about me and my geek abilities. It is important for me to share this with you, as I know it will empower you to start taking action on your web editing and taking back control from the “web-guy”.

Everyone’s first website is complete and utter rubbish!

That includes me!

At the time of building it I wanted it to be perfect and spent  hours and hours coding and checking and sorting the graphics and pictures etc. I had a banner up on the front page of the site

“Website under construction”

Someone then saw my site, and said something that changed my perception of web development for ever.

“ALL websites are ALWAYS under construction”

What he was trying to say to me was, get the site up and working for you as soon as possible even if it looks really messy. If you wait until it is perfect before launching then it will never go live!

You can see this even today in some of the sites I have built, I get an idea, create a really basic site, with the copy I want on it and put it live. No fancy graphics, no images… just the raw site.

This has the effect of getting you moving more quickly to get the site looking much better, hiring a graphic designer and/or developer to tidy things up for you.

So the take away point here is take action, get a really messy site built and then work towards perfection as you go along.

Drop me a note on twitter or on the Personal Trainer Success NING site to tell me your messy site is up.

Regards
Tim

PS. You know I must have wasted hours, if not days trying to get my site perfect, when all along it was always going to be a big pile of C-RAP. Hopefully this has inspired you to take some action and get it up.

Help! My Web Guy Has Gone AWOL.

It’s the FitGeek – Tim Goodwin again with a little story to tell you. A fellow fitness professional, lets call him Paul, called me up the other day and was in a bit of a panic. He said:

‘My website is not appearing on Google anymore and my web guy has gone AWOL, what am I going to do!’

The statement my ‘web-guy’ has gone AWOL is one I hear so much!

Are they really that unreliable?

Fitness professionals are not geeks (generally), so when stuff goes wrong and your web-guy is not answering your calls you end up being really stuck. These guys have you over a barrel too because they know you are stuck. Being at the mercy of some nerd behind their thick rimmed glasses is not your idea of good business, when your business relies on the internet.

In 2009, your web presence is essential, your clients expect  more than just a shoddy web page thrown together using FrontPage or your brothers mates idea of what looks good.

At the same time you still want to obtain some level of control over the content on your web page, so you are not at the mercy of the geeks.

Fortunately the technology is moving in your favour, I am seeing tools that are much more accessible to the normal human being! All this is good, but you do still need to get a handle on a little HTML.

There are some great books out there that will help out. On my personal page on the Personal Trainer Success I have put a list of my books that I recommend. The Visual QuickStart HTML book is one that is on my desk next to my monitor permanently. It’ll get you started in less than a few hours, and act as a reference you can come back to time and time again.

So get over to http://personaltrainersuccess.ning.com now and check out my book list.

Let me know how you get on with the book, drop me a message on twitter or at the Personal Trainer Success site.

Tim

PS. I know what its like to be held to ransom by a geek who knew more about my site than I did. I should never get in that position again, hopefully the information in this post will stop you getting in to this situation as well!

Two resources you should be using.

It’s the FitGeek – Tim Goodwin and I thought I would share with you a recent discovery I made about the average technical knowledge of the fitness professional.

You see one of my flaws as a “geek in remission” is I expect my peers in the fitness industry to know lots about techy geek stuff. In general this is really not the case.

In fact I have counted the number of fitness professionals who are tech-savvy that I know of on just one hand!

This puts me in a bit of a predicament really, as the products I have had planned for the “average” fitness professional are probably all wrong.

You see I really want to help you get your web sites and Internet presence up to scratch for the new year, to boost the image of our profession going in to a year which is likely to be really tough for those people in our industry that are just not up to scratch.

I am spending much of my time in two personal trainer forums on the Internet helping its members out with their tech queries. If you are not a member of these two areas, I recommend both as they are both highly active with lots of great ego-free members.

The first is Personal Trainer Success:

http://personaltrainersuccess.ning.com

The second is The Fitness Bootcamp Inner Circle:

http://thefitnessbootcampinnercircle.com/

Drop me a message when you come on board or leave comments on some of my posts. I really want to know what your biggest problems and concerns when it comes to tech stuff to get my products back in order.

See you there.

Tim

PS. Thanks for reading this through to the end, I know that we all get bombarded with information we don’t care about. Hopefully the information here will help you out immeasurably.
